Joint Technology Initiatives (JTI) is a financing instrument for the Seventh EU Framework Programme. They aim to promote European research cooperation, facilitating the creation of public - private long-term partnership between European countries when the size of the goals of research and technological development to achieve and the scale of available resources so justify. They have a strategic approach.

They are large European research programs, developed in strategic sectors and with a duration of 5-10 years. Concentrate the resources of industry, national governments and the European Union on certain aspects of a research field vector of economic growth and European consistency.

Joint Technology Initiatives are created from research programs formulated by the Technology Platforms, are industry-oriented and develop novel forms of partnership between public and private sectors.

This research approach covers a small but important number of aspects of research in a particular field. So far, the European Commission has identified six areas of research for the creation of Joint Technology Initiatives:
